While Antwerp rests, the transformation continues underneath
Project update | While the city slows down for what is left of summer, transformation continues beneath the surface.
At the Wapper, the historic Ruien have been opened up, revealing an important layer of the city's history. Here, a new water feature is taking shape that, from 2028 onwards, will purify rainwater from an underground reservoir in a closed, circular system. Besides bringing cooling to the city centre, it will reintroduce water as a visible element in this historic public space.
The redesigned square will offer more room to stay and enjoy the city, with generous seating, mature trees, lush planting, water-purifying vegetation and terraces. At the same time, the edges of the square will remain an important route for cyclists and pedestrians, offering space for terraces and ensuring smooth, safe movement through the area. We look very much forward to seeing Wapper take further shape after the summer.
